Can You Hear the Quiet?
Can you hear the quiet?
Like the creeping dawn
Of days long gone
And the bill to come
For a deal never done
In the night?
Can you feel the humming
Like the distant drumming
of Jesus not coming
As the world still turns
And the church never learns
Listen to the hush
Of the deafening crush
Naming all our fears
And filling all our ears
With water
Look up at the night
Can you see the spreading stain
Of fireworks bursting in the rain
And scarecrows laughing
In the grain?
Can you feel the prayers
Of a billion blank stares
As the seeping meaning
of Harry Potter’s dreaming
Sits still as stone?
Can you smell the silence
Of the future steaming
Warming up to run
Like crickets sleeping in the sun.
Can you hear them breathing?
Can you sense a single sound
Of what’s coming round
And what’s crouching from view
On the Fourth of July
Of 2022?
